As former president of Frostburg State University for 9 years, I had the honor and privilege of meeting Susan several times. I heard such great stories about her and the legacy she left behind at the university. My sincerest love to her family during this very sad time of loss.
I had the pleasure of working with Susan at FSU. She had so many attributes: smart, collegial, caring, dedicated to her family and students, a superb advocate for her faculty, and funny. She will be remembered with great fondness and appreciation for her. Gary Horowitz
I remember Susan Mary and Michael’s wedding. I was 12 years old and thought it was really a big deal. Did I have some wine? They stayed at our house when they attended a funeral in Springfield, I’ll , when we were newly married.
It’s too bad how life leads us in different directions focusing on our families and our jobs. We often just meet again at weddings and funerals. Too bad. It was good to see you all at Micheal’s funeral and Charles memorial.

Susan touched our lives in so many ways it is difficult to even describe. In addition to being the loving mother of my beloved wife Jolyn, she shared a belief in people and was a true peaceful warrior for the under represented or miss represented. As a civil rights activist and as an educator she fought for equal rights and equal access to education. Her leadership in demonstrating the values that uphold each person's birthright to be the best they can be was exemplary. The world has lost a true light on the path. For those of us who were touched by what she shared, we know that we can help to carry a similar commitment to purpose and helping others. She has been my friend and mother in law. I have met few people in my life that share her depth of compassion or her capacity to witness another person, their victories and struggles with unconditional love. Thank you Susan. We will never forget you!
So many memories! From lunches, just the two of us, to nursing graduation, Napa valley vacation and trips to the casinos. I loved you so much and I’m so glad that you got to talk to Coby the week of Christmas. I loved how you called me honey and always told me you loved me. Thank you for all your kindness and live over the years. I will miss you dearly, but will see you again.

I knew Susan from her time as Dean of the School of Education at Frostburg and after as I was at MSDE. I visited Frostburg a number of times, but it is mostly in the meetings that we held as a community of Deans and Directors that I will never forget her. She was feisty, represented her community of leaders well, and with humor that will always live as a memory for me. She was beloved by her colleagues at the university, known as G.O.D.....Grand Old Dean. She fought for her students, her college, her world of educators. She loved her family beyond measure. She was devastated by the death of her beloved Mike, but she soldiered on and was a good friend to many. Her voice, one of integrity, humor, love, and compassion, will be greatly missed. I can only imagine that her family will miss her more than they can express. Rest well, Susan. You have earned it. Thank you for the privilege of knowing you.
