Pete was born on November 22, 1943, and moved to Baltimore, MD with his parents as a kid. He went on to attend high school at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in A Course and graduated in 1961. Pete began his collegiate studies in New Jersey at Princeton University graduating with a degree in Physics in 1965, and from there continued his education with achieving his doctorate degree in Physics from University of Chicago.
Pete always had a love of trains and transportation and was able to turn this into his career at MTA. Pete met his beloved wife, Lannetta, while working for the Department of Transportation (MDOT) and they got married in 1989. He later went to work and serve as vice president at Parsons Transportation group, where he would retire.
Pete was a longtime IRM member and devoted volunteer, he was known as a “fixture at IRM, especially in the Track Department” and is the person who Schmidt Siding is named after. Pete also spent time as a volunteer at the Baltimore Streetcar Museum and more recently at the B&O Railroad Museum. Pete acted in many different roles during his time at IRM as an editor, publishing “impressively detailed track maps” and contributing to the Schmidt photo collection. Pete will be missed by the IRM community and will be remembered for his “friendly presence and his wisdom, experience, and support of IRM and of railroad preservation in general”.
