Major John C Lewandowski was my very first district commander when I began my 24 year police career. He was stern, but, fair. He was the reason I was happy to come to work every day. I remember the uniform and vehicle inspections. How good he made his troops feel to be wearing the uniform of the BPD. How he would come in and address our roll calls and praise us for the work we did. How he would go out into the communities and speak to the residents and stay out there for hours on end. How officers from all the 8 other districts wanted to transfer to the Northeast just to work for him. How clean the station, cars and officers were while he was in command. How the officers would come in early and stay late, just because it was fun to be there. To us, he was a God of a district commander. He will truly be missed.

Prayers to the Lewandowski Family. Mr. John was one of the best in every department, He had a love for Ms. Rose I have never seen before, you could tell they were sole mates. Just the way they would look at each other with no words spoken.
As for a father he was the greatest Dad ever and his family was his world. Talk about daddy's little girls he had his hands full. The triple bunks beds he built with his own hands were the best.
A lot of wonderful memories growing up. I never felt like an only child with 5 sisters across the alley. You guys always made room for me. One of the best summers ever was down the shore. You always made room at the dinner table and never said no to sleep overs. When he took a shower the whole block could hear him singing. A lot of great memories, thank you for them.
To the Lewandowski Family Mere words are never enough to take away your pain. However, please know you are all in our thoughts, in our prayers, and always in our hearts. We pray you will once again find joy and peace and someday, be able to smile as you remember this amazing, wonderful man.

"Best of the Best".......If you were to design a prototype of a police commander-it would be patterned after John Lewandowski. He was smart, progressive in his thinking; and had high expectations for those who worked for him. He was also extremely fair to those who worked for him. The four or so years I spent working for him were some of the best in my law enforcement career. I learned a lot from John Lewandowski. As I stated before, he was the "Best of the Best".

John was an engaged, caring parent and husband who was a strong conduit to all family members in any situation. He brought out the best in people ( a real gift) and was always open, honest, sincere and welcoming to my wife Wendy and me.
As his cousin, I always admired his well-balanced personality. An outstanding and successful professional in the Baltimore Police Department. A Runner. A Craftsman. Very spiritual, but real and without pretense. Extremely easy to speak with and always had a smile on his countenance. A wise, educated man who understood people..A Leader. A family man. It may be trite to say, but he was a real gift to me and to others. A role model to me and will be missed.
