Jean Arthur Range
August 6, 1937 - February 16, 2022
Jean Range graduated from Hooper City High School in 1955. She went on to receive a bachelors of science degree from Tuskegee Institute in 1960, and worked as a dietician for the New York City Health Department. She moved to Baltimore in 1969 and returned to Birmingham years later and went on to receive a masters degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1977. She was hired to teach food service at Samuel Gompers Vocational School in 1978 until its closure in 1981. She was then elected to tenure into the Baltimore City Public School System on September 1, 1981 and was appointed to the Westside Skill Center in 1982, teaching food service. While working full time, she completed 33 credits between 1978-1983 at the University of Maryland Graduate School. She furthered her studies at the Community College of Baltimore focusing on special education in 1989 and Coppin State University as a non-degree student taking vocational education classes in 1990. She received standard professional 1 certification in 1979 and advanced professional certification in 1982, both certificates granted by the Maryland State Department of Education. She was devoted to her son Michael and was very sincere in attempting to maintain his well-being and promote his development. She lived several states away, but phone calls bridged the distance and kept her close to her sister Barbara, brother Arthur and nieces and nephews, if they wanted to talk to her. She liked being active and enjoyed horse races, traveling on occasion, going to the movies with family members and further enjoyed the company of her few close friends James Campbell, Delores Hospadales and Sylvia Gilchrist. She died on February 16, 2022, due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. She is survived by her brother Arthur Range, sister Barbara Hoyrd, many nieces and nephews and her son Michael Range, who will miss his mother and best friend, Jean Arthur Range.
