From as far back as I can remember, Miss Helen was part of our extended family. I cannot count the times that I saw her and my mother (Kate Kemmer) hanging onto the fence by the alley or talking to one another across the alley for what seemed hours. (They had to catch up on all the latest "news"). As I grew up, she was always a hello away, and that broad grin. When I was working at Polomski's grocery store, she was one of the ladies who taught me grocery store Polish. Whenever I came back to Locust Point to visit my parents, Miss Helen always managed a quick yell across the alley, just to let us know that she was still around, and that she still cared. Locust Point lost a Grand Dame, when the Lord decided it was time for her to come home. Now, in my opinion, there is another Saint Helen in heaven to look after us, and our beloved Locust Point.
